Schools invest significant time and energy into improving outcomes for students—through curriculum, interventions, professional learning, and systems design. Yet even the strongest initiatives depend on a few foundational conditions being in place. In this month’s newsletter, we focus on what we think of as the first dominoes of strong literacy systems: a clear and shared vision for instructional excellence, tight implementation of high-quality instructional materials, regular coaching and feedback to strengthen practice, and schedules that protect core instruction and collaboration.

These enabling conditions may seem simple, but they are far from guaranteed. In fact, many schools and districts struggle to establish even these basic foundations consistently. And when these earliest dominoes are not standing, adding more initiatives often increases complexity rather than improves outcomes. Strong systems begin by getting the fundamentals right.

This month, we highlight resources and practical tips related to these four enabling conditions, with the goal of helping educators and leaders reflect on the foundational structures that make high-quality instruction possible. Because before we add something new, it is worth asking: Are the conditions for success already in place?

Instructional Tips of the Month

Elementary Educators: Protect the Power of the Literacy Block

One of the most important enabling conditions in elementary settings is a schedule that protects strong instruction. The literacy block should function as protected time for students to engage in the core curriculum through reading, writing, discussion, and explicit instruction—not as time easily interrupted by competing initiatives or disconnected activities.

Instructional Move:
This month, review one week of instruction and ask:

• Did students receive the full literacy block each day?
  
  

• Did instruction stay aligned to the curriculum as designed?
  
  

• Where did students actively read, write, and talk about text?

Common Threats to a Protected Literacy Block

Consider whether any of these reduce actual instructional minutes:

• Students are pulled from Tier 1 core instruction to receive Tier 2 or Tier 3 support. Intervention should support core instruction—not replace access to it.
  
  

• Recess, lunch, or specials interrupt the literacy block. Mid-block transitions often reduce momentum and significantly cut into usable instructional time.
  
  

• Announcements, assemblies, or schoolwide activities regularly occur during literacy instruction. Frequent disruptions erode consistency.
  
  

• Intervention groups begin before whole-group instruction finishes. Some students miss first instruction and only receive fragmented pieces of the lesson.
  
  

• Testing practice or disconnected review activities replace core curriculum lessons. These shifts often reduce engagement with grade-level instruction.
  
  

• Small-group rotations consume the block without enough time in connected text reading or explicit instruction. Rotations can create activity without ensuring meaningful learning time.
  
  

• Transitions take too long. Moving between centers, materials, or groups may quietly reduce instructional minutes across the week.
  
  

• Planning gaps lead to downtime. When materials, routines, or lesson flow are not ready, valuable time is lost.

Why it matters:
Protecting instructional time strengthens the schedule as an enabling condition and ensures high-quality materials have the time they need to work.

Tier 2 and Tier 3 should add support, not subtract access to strong Tier 1 instruction.

Secondary Educators: Strengthen Coherence Through Shared Instructional Moves

A shared vision becomes real when students experience consistent instructional expectations across classrooms. At the secondary level, one practical way to strengthen coherence is to identify a small number of shared literacy practices that all teachers use regularly.

Instructional Move:
Select one shared practice this month—such as close reading routines, academic discussion protocols, or explicit vocabulary routines—and ask:

• Are students encountering this practice consistently across classes?
  
  

• How does it support the curriculum rather than sit beside it?
  
  

• What feedback can coaching conversations provide about implementation?

Why it matters:
Consistency across classrooms strengthens the shared vision and helps students experience literacy as a connected system.

Tip: Strong systems grow when schools protect instructional time, build coherence in practice, and strengthen alignment between classroom learning and family support.

Family Engagement Tip of the Month:

One of the most overlooked enabling conditions is alignment between home and school.

Families don’t need more programs—they need clarity and connection.

Encourage families to:

• Ask: “What are you learning in reading right now?”
  

• Practice the same types of reading, talking, and writing happening in school
  

• Focus on simple, consistent routines (reading, discussing, rereading)
  

Why it matters:
When home and school are aligned, students experience reinforcement—not fragmentation—of learning.
