Text-Based Inquiry—the Role of Texts, Tasks, and Talk

This session provides an overarching vision for quality text-based work in the disciplines. Participants will engage as learners in a sequence of tasks aligned to a discipline-specific complex text. Participants will reflect on this experience by examining the relationships among text, task, and talk by learning about sequenced, text-dependent questions and tasks as part of rigorous instruction; learning about the importance of sequenced discussions to promote academically productive talk about complex nonfiction texts; and clarifying the role of writing-to-learn instructional practices and academically productive talk to scaffold instruction and advance student learning.
