HQIM selection and implementation

Choosing a literacy curriculum is one part of the work. Teachers also need support putting it into practice. Sterling Literacy Consulting helps schools and districts nationwide review and adopt high-quality instructional materials (HQIM), plan implementation and connect curriculum-based professional learning with classroom coaching.

As a curriculum-agnostic partner, Sterling Literacy supports teachers using different instructional programs. Whether you are choosing new materials or working with a curriculum already in place, we start with your priorities and the needs of your educators and students.

Review and select literacy materials

Sterling Literacy helps your team evaluate materials using a shared set of criteria. Our curriculum review tools include The Reading League Curriculum Rubrics for kindergarten through grade 5 and IMET ELA rubrics for grades 6 through 12. For adoption decisions, we can also work with rubrics selected by your district.

The process includes stakeholder communication, discussion of the evidence and alignment with Tier 1 instruction and multi-tiered systems of support (MTSS). Curriculum decisions can also connect with a broader review of instruction, assessment and reading support. Our literacy audits and strategic planning services help teams look at those pieces together.

Plan what happens after adoption

Implementation planning connects the materials you select with the professional learning and support your educators need. The Sterling Literacy Consulting team listens to leaders and teachers, observes instruction and uses what we learn to shape the work with you.

Support can include:

  • Implementation planning

  • Curriculum-based professional learning

  • Curriculum-based coaching

  • Fidelity monitoring and support

The combination depends on your starting point and priorities. We review feedback and student data as the work progresses and adjust the plan when needed.

Work alongside teachers

Sterling Literacy coaches work with teachers on the units and lessons they are preparing to teach. Support can include unpacking standards and tasks, co-planning lessons, modeling instruction and co-teaching. Teachers and coaches use lesson observations, video reflection and post-lesson conversations to consider student responses and decide what to adjust.

Screening, diagnostic and formative assessment data help guide instructional adjustments. Resources between visits and coach-the-coach support help teams continue the work.

From there, we can discuss the curriculum review, planning, professional learning or coaching that fits your needs.
